Relay Writing is a free writing project intended to demonstrate that we can break all the rules to create a good story, or even a masterpiece. We have no synopsis, no character plans, no long term plot, no particular setting, problem or resolution (yet), and it's going to have a few hundred different authors that don't know each other.

Here's what it is - read the stories, and you can then write the following section. Make it between 800-1000 words, and stick to the rules, and you stand a good chance of it being accepted. If it is accepted, and nobody beats you to it, it'll get tagged on to the story for everyone else to read. If it doesn't get accepted, we'll let you know, and tell you why. It might purely be bad grammar or spelling. You may re-submit after your changes have been made. You will still get a mention in the contributors list, even if your attempt is not accepted.

Simply have a go, and be part of literature history!

How to submit:
Write around 800 - 1600 words to tag onto the end of the section of the story you have just read. Submit your piece to admin@relaywriting.net, or use our online submission form, and we will evaluate it, and use it if it comes up to scratch and obeys the rules.

Rules:

  • Don't write too much or too little.
  • Don't kill off or introduce characters without considering very strongly what effect this will have on the plot.
  • Spellcheck!
  • Don't try to make too many things happen in your piece - the temptation will be to make an impact, but the story will work better if you take it slowly.
  • Include contact details, so we can arrange copyright and commission if and when the piece is published.
  • Stick to a similar style to that which the story is already written in.
  • Practice in the forum first, to get the hang of relay writing and pick up a few tips. More credence will be given to those who have made an effort to get involved with the project...
  • More to come!
